Front Door and Bulkhead

June 29, 2026

We continue our efforts to protect the beautiful and historic Houghton Memorial Building that the Historical Society leases from the town for our museum, storage, and office. This year, we hired Early American Restoration (the company who restored our windows) to do the same with our front doors. They removed the doors and built an attractive temporary front door and entryway so that we could still have access to the building. The old front doors had been painted over the years - the company estimated that they stripped 9 coats of paint from the inside of the doors and a whopping 18 coats from the outside. They then made some repairs and primed and painted the newly exposed wood. They stripped the bronze hardware and installed new weatherstripping. The result was stunning. The project was paid for with Community Preservation funds.

Looking around the building, we saw that the bulkhead was in terrible shape, with a lot of rot, peeling paint, and bare wood showing. We hired Dana Gray to replace what needed to be replaced and repaint the entire structure. Now it is not only a thing of beauty (if you can call a bulkhead beautiful) but it will protect the building from mold-causing dampness and rodent invasion. The project was funded by a generous donation from former Littleton residents Anna and Rob Hueston.
